2022 FIFA World Cup to be held in Qatar

On July 15, 2020, the Federation Internationale de Football Association announced that the 2022 World Cup is to be held in Qatar. The governing body also released schedule of matches.

Highlights

• The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be the first world cup to be held in Arab World and also the first in a muslim-majority country. 
• The World Cup would be the last to involve 32 teams as the teams are to be increased to 48 in 2026 tournament.
• The tournament is to be held in November-December. 
• The final match of the tournament has been scheduled on December 18, 2020, which is also Qatar National Day.

India

• India has never participated at the FIFA World Cup. 
• Indian National Team ranks 108 in the latest FIFA rankings that was released in 2019.
• The Indian Football team has participated in AFC Asian Cup and Olympics.

Liverpool wins 2019-20 English Premier League title

Following Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on 25^th June 2020, Liverpool clinched the 2019-20 English Premier League season with 7 games still left in the season.  This is the first time that Liverpool has won the English Premier League title.

• As of 26^th June 2020, Liverpool by winning 28 of their 31 games in the season has accumulated 86 points. 
• Manchester City with 63 points in 31 games is at the second place of the standing table. 
• With 7 games remaining in the season, 3 points are being awarded for winning a game, if Liverpool loses their remaining 7 games as well then also Manchester City can finish the 2019-20 season with a maximum of 84 points.
• Liverpool’s performance has been exceptional since the last 2 years as they became the only English Club in 2019 to win the International treble of UEFA Champions League 2018-19, UEFA Super Cup 2019, and also the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup.
• Overall, this was the 19^th title for Liverpool in the 1st tier of club football in England and also the first since 1989-90 season. 
• The English Premier League replaced English Football League in the year 1992 as the 1st Tier of English football.

Rohit Sharma nominated for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

On May 31, 2020, the BCCI nominated Rohit Sharma for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards. The Award is considered to be the highest sporting honour award in India.

Highlights

• The period of consideration for a person to get nominated is from January 2016 to December 2019. 
• Rohit has become the first T20 cricketer to score four centuries. 
• Also, he holds record of 150 plus score in around 8 ODIs. 
• He also holds the greatest number of centuries in ODI matches since 2017, that numbered to 18.
• He was also the ICC ODI Cricketer of the year, 2019. 
• He received this award as he was the first player to score five ODI centuries in a single edition of the World Cup.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

• The award is the highest sporting honour of India. The award is presented by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and sports. 
• The award is presented for outstanding performance for a period of 4 years. 
• The award comprises of cash prize of Rs 7.5 lakhs.

Sports Authority of India deposits Rs 30,000 in Khelo India Athletes accounts

The Sports Authority of India recently transferred Rs 30,000 to the accounts of Khelo India athletes. The authority has spent Rs 8.25 crores in all to achieve this.

• The Sports Authority of India recently deposited Rs 30,000 to more than 2749 Khelo India athletes accounts. 
• The sports allowance has been provided for the athletes to travel to their home town, to keep up their diet at home and to suffice other miscellaneous expenses.
• The Out of Pocket Allowance under Khelo India scholarship is Rs 1.20 lakhs annually.

• The Khelo India was launched to boost sports culture in India. 
• The scheme is being implemented by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. 
• The scheme also aims to make India a great sporting nation.
• The Government of India under the scheme provides financial assistance of Rs 5 lakhs per annum over the period of 8 years.
• Under the Scheme, the ministry of sports conducts school level, college level and university level programmes.

Mizoram provides industrial status to Sports

The Mizoram State Government has recently provided industrial status to Sports. This has been done by the government to attract investment in the Sports industry.

• The Mizoram Government is framing new industrial policy under which the sports have been included as sports category. 
• The State of Mizoram is known for its great interests towards sports. 
• Of all the footballers in the north east states, Mizoram has pool of football players that play in leading clubs of India.

• At least 150 players in the league are from Mizoram.

ICC bans use of saliva to shine a Cricket Ball

On May 18, 2020, Anil Kumble led ICC (International Cricket Committee) banned the use of saliva to shine the ball. The practice meant for swing bowling is now primarily held as health risk due to the threats of COVID-19

Highlights

• The former Indian Cricket player Anil Kumble is the current chairman of ICC Cricket Committee. 
• The Committee has banned use of saliva to shine a cricket ball. 
• However, the ICC Cricket Committee saw no harm in use of sweat to shine the ball. 
• Instead use of artificial substance to shine the ball is being considered.
• Apart from this, the committee also recommended to increase use of DRS review per innings from two to three.

Why is saliva or sweat used?

• The swing of the cricket ball is mainly governed by three factors namely shiny side, climatic conditions and behaviour of the pitch. 
• The cricket ball creates turbulence as it swings. 
• The player uses sweat or saliva to make one side look shinier. 
• This helps to create challenging conditions to the batsman.
• It is legal and allowed in all matches conducted by ICC. It is called ball tampering.
• Ball Tampering is usually done after the ball wears away in the second half of a match.

Types of swinging

• There are two types of swinging namely conventional swinging and reverse swinging. 
• During conventional swinging, the ball moves towards the side of greater turbulence. 
• During reverse swinging, the ball swings the other side.
• The swinging of the ball in opposite direction is mainly because, one side of the ball is shinier (or made shinier with saliva or sweat). 
• This shinier side has reduced air friction that makes the ball swing in opposite direction creating challenging condition for the batman.

Commonwealth Youth Games postponed to 2023

The 2021 Commonwealth Youth Games is being postponed to 2023 as it faced clash of dates with the Tokyo Olympics. The Tokyo Olympics that was scheduled to be held from July 23 to August 8, 2020, was postponed by a year.

• The decision was taken by the Commonwealth Games Federation Executive Board. 
• The 17^th Commonwealth youth games were to be held between August 1 and August 7, 2021 in Tobago and Trinidad.

Commonwealth Youth Games

• The Commonwealth Youth Games is an international sport event that is organized by the Commonwealth Games Federation. 
• The first commonwealth games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland. 
• The Commonwealth games is being conducted since 2000. 
• It was then conducted in 2004, 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2017. 
• The 2008 Commonwealth youth games were conducted in Pune, India.

• The Federation was formed in 1932. It is the foremost authority that frames rules for the commonwealth games. 
• After the success of the first British Empire Games that was held in Canada in 1930, it was decided that games similar to that of Olympics should be conducted every four years.

ICC Ranking: India declines from top position to third

On May 2, 2020, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the ranking of cricket teams. According to the ranking, Australia ranked top and India ranked third.  New Zealand was ranked second in the ranking.

• For more than 43 months India was placed at top position. 
• The current ranking considers all the matches played since 2017. 
• The matches played since 2017 were considered 50% and the matches played since 2019 were considered 100%.
• The points of the countries include Australia with 116 points, New Zealand earned 115 points and India had earned 114 points.
• The biggest fall in the ranking was suffered by South Africa. 
• It fell by 8 points and dropped below Sri Lanka at 6^th. 
• This was because, South Africa played three series in the period selected by ICC and had lost 8 tests. 
• It had played a total of 9 test matches since February 2019. 
• The matches were against Sri Lanka, India and England.

• The ICC Ranking was introduced in 2003. 
• India’s rank was behind Australia for a period of more than 74 months since its launch.

• Australia for the first time has acquired top spot in T20 as well as in Test series.

What is “Ball Tampering” that is being considered by ICC recently?

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering to legalize ball tampering.

Context of the News

• The ICC is considering to use an artificial substance under the supervision of umpires to polish cricket balls as applying saliva risks the spread of COVID-19. 
• The use of artificial substance has been banned in cricket.

What is ball tampering?

• Ball Tampering is an action in which the player of the fielding team in cricket illegally alters the condition of the ball. 
• It is done to achieve favourable bowling conditions against the batsman. 
• Using sweat or spit to remove the mud or to polish the ball is common and is allowed.

Why is sweat or spit used?

• The sweat or spit is used to make the ball look shiny. 
• The technique is used by the bowlers after the ball gets older, mostly after 35 overs. 
• The sweat or spit is used to make one side shiny and the other side rough.

Physics behind using sweat or spit

• The swing of the ball depends on three factors namely climatic conditions, shiny side and behaviour of the pitch. 
• The science of shiny side is applied in using sweat or spit.
• The cricket ball creates turbulence as its swings.

Legislation

• Under subsection 3 of the Laws of Cricket the ball shall be polished without use of artificial substances. 
• It can be dried with towel to remove the mud in the ball.

PV Sindhu named as ambassador in the Badminton World Federation campaign

On April 22, 2020, the World champion P V Sindhu was named the ambassador of the campaign  “I am Badminton”. The campaign was launched by Badminton World Federation (BWF).

About the Campaign

• The campaign provides platform for the badminton players to advocate and commit to honest and clean play. It also helps the players to express their love and respect for the game.
• Apart from P V Sindhu, there are other ambassadors. They are Michelle Li of Canada, Huang Ya Qiong and Zheng Si Wei of China, Valeska Knoblauch of Germany, Chan Ho Yuen of Hong Kong.

• P V Sindhu is an Indian professional badminton player. She rose to world rank 2 in 2017. Miss Sindhu is the first Indian to become Badminton World Champion.

• The Badminton World Federation is an international governing body of the badminton sport. It was founded by 1934 and has been recognized by the International Olympic Committee. This means one can enter Olympics through games of BWF as well.

పారాలింపిక్స్‌లో మహిళ షాట్‌పుట్‌ (ఎఫ్‌-53) ఈవెంట్‌లో భారత క్రీడాకారిణి, 46 ఏళ్ల దీపా మలిక్‌ రజత పతకాన్ని సొంతం చేసుకుంది, దీంతో పారాలింపిక్స్‌లో పతకం నెగ్గిన తొలి భారతీయురాలిగా రికార్డు సృష్టించింది. 2016 సెప్టెంబర్‌ 12న జరిగిన ఫైనల్లో దీపా ఇనుప గుండును 461 మీటర్ల దూరం విసిరి రెండో స్థానంలో నిలిచింది. ఫాతిమా నెధమ్‌ (బహ్రెయిన్‌-476 మీటర్లు) స్వర్ణం సాధించగా, దిమిత్రా కొరోకిడా (గ్రీస్‌-428 మీటర్లు) కాంస్యం సంపాదించింది. దీపా మలిక్‌ 2012లో కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం నుంచి అర్జున అందుకొని ఈ అవార్డు పొందిన పెద్దవయస్కురాలిగా (42 ఏళ్ల వయసులో) గుర్తింపు పొందింది.

పారాలింపిక్స్‌లో 2016 సెప్టెంబర్‌ 11న జరిగిన పురుషుల హైజంప్‌ టి-42 లో తమిళనాడుకు చెందిన మరియప్పన్‌ తంగవేలు  స్వర్ణ పతకం సాధించాడు, దీంతో ఒలిపింక్స్‌లో భారత్‌ నుంచి హైజంప్‌ విభాగంలోస్వర్ణ పతకం సాధించిన మొదటి అథ్లెట్‌గా రికార్డు సృష్టించాడు. ఇదే విభాగంలో నోయిడాకు చెందిన వరుణ్‌ సింగ్‌ భటి కాంస్యం సాధించాడు, తంగవేలు 189 మీ.ఎత్తుకు ఎగిరి అగ్రస్థానంలో నిలవగా భటి 186 మీ.తో మూడో స్థానంలో నిలిచాడు. అమెరికాకు చెందిన సామ్‌గ్రెవే (186) రెండో స్థానంతో రజతం అందుకున్నాడు.

యోగేశ్వర్‌ దత్‌కు పతక ప్రమోషన్‌

2012 లండన్‌ ఒలింపిక్స్‌లో రెజ్లర్‌ యోగేశ్వర్‌దత్‌ సాధించిన కాంస్యంను 4 సం॥ తర్వాత రజతంగా అప్‌గ్రేడ్‌ చేస్తూ ఒలింపిక్స్‌ కమిటీ నిర్ణయం తీసుకుంది. ఆ గేమ్స్‌లో రజతం సాధించిన రష్యా రెజ్లర్‌ కుదుఖోవ్‌ అంతర్జాతీయ డోపింగ్‌ వ్యతిరేక సంస్థ (వాడా) నిర్వహించిన డోపింగ్‌ పరీక్షలో నిషేధిత ఉత్ప్రేరకాలు వాడినట్లు రుజవు కావడంతో యోగేశ్వర్‌కు రజతం దక్కింది. పురుషుల 60 కేజీల ఫ్రీస్టయిల్‌ విభాగం ప్రి కార్టర్‌ ఫైనల్లో బెసిక్‌ కుదుఖోవ్‌ చేతిలో యోగేశ్వర్‌ ఓడిపోయాడు అయితే కుదుఖోవ్‌ ఫైనల్‌కు చేరడంతో వచ్చిన రేప్‌చేజ్‌ అవకాశంతో యోగేశ్వర్‌ కాంస్య పతకం సాధించాడు. నాలుగుసార్లు ప్రపంచ చాంపియన్‌, బీజింగ్‌ గేమ్స్‌లో కాంస్యం సాధించిన కుదుఖోవ్‌ 2013లో జరిగిన రోడ్డు ప్రమాదంలో మరణించాడు.
